Brick Works Glasgow: A Celebration of Scotland’s Brickmaking Heritage and Innovation

On Thursday, 16th October, the Brick Development Association hosted its first-ever Scottish event, Brick Works Glasgow — a vibrant celebration of brick creativity, innovation, and collaboration. The evening brought together architects, designers, engineers, and brick industry professionals for an inspiring programme of presentations, discussion, and networking.

Hosted by IG Masonry Support, with support from Raeburn Brick the event featured insightful talks from Loader & Monteith Architects and JM Architects, showcasing the versatility and enduring appeal of brick in contemporary Scottish architecture.

A highlight of the evening came from Jim Raeburn, who explored Scotland’s rich brickmaking history — from its industrial peak in the Glasgow area to the continuing role of Raeburn Brick in modern construction.

This was followed by Douglas Baxter and Ken Tighe of Bricklink, who presented the Pennywell Urban Regeneration Project and Lincluden Stables Redevelopment, Dumfries. Their case study demonstrated how high-quality, locally-sourced clay brick, manufactured by Raeburn Brick, is being used to create sustainable, connected communities — maintaining architectural consistency while championing environmental responsibility.

Guests were also invited to join a guided tour of the Blantyre facility the following day, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship and innovation driving Scotland’s brickmaking industry forward.
